Goliath was Just the Beginning...Week 11

1 Samuel 17:45-47 (NIV) 45 David said to the Philistine, “You come
against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in
the name of the Lord Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom
you have defied. 46 This day the Lord will deliver you into my hands,
and I’ll strike you down and cut off your head. This very day I will give
the carcasses of the Philistine army to the birds and the wild animals,
and the whole world will know that there is a God in Israel. 47 All those
gathered here will know that it is not by sword or spear that
the Lord saves; for the battle is the Lord’s, and he will give all of you
into our hands.”
Romans 3:22-26 (NIV) 22 This righteousness is given through
faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference between
Jew and Gentile, 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of
God, 24 and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. 25 God presented Christ as a sacrifice of
atonement, through the shedding of his blood—to be received by
faith. He did this to demonstrate his righteousness, because in his
forbearance he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished—
26 he did it to demonstrate his righteousness at the present time, so as
to be just and the one who justifies those who have faith in Jesus.
God __________________ us through our faith in Jesus!
Luther summed up his focus on the humanity of God in Christ and total trust in such a God with the biblical slogan “justified by faith apart
from works prescribed by the law” (Rom. 3:28)

Goliath was just the ___________________ for David.
John 8:31-32 (NIV) 31 To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If
you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. 32 Then you will
know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
Once we have ____________, as followers of Christ, we will
behave as if we ___________________ to Him.
“The distinction between law and gospel, Luther asserted, is “the
greatest skill in Christendom” because it keeps Christians alert to the
enduring temptation of using the gospel as law and the law as gospel.
It is the difference between the language of “If … then” and “Because
… therefore.” The former imposes a condition; the latter does not.”
(Gritsch, E. W. (2010). A History of Lutheranism (Second Edition, p. 15). Minneapolis, MN: Fortress Press.)
We live out our lives as Christians, sharing the ____________
and living lives of service to ___________ out of love for
Christ.
Let Me Be Thine Forever LSB 689
Let me be Thine forever,
My faithful God and Lord;
Let me forsake Thee never
Nor wander from Thy Word.
Lord, do not let me waver,
But give me steadfastness,
And for such grace forever
Thy holy name I’ll bless. Amen.
